New switch · same two dealers

Sober or drunk?

Your dealer now turns up one of two ways. Drunk is the one you know and fear: loud, filthy and three whiskeys past professional. Sober is the same dealer after a long talk with HR and a large black coffee. Same clock, same blinds, same attitude. A lot less swearing. And for the fellowship hall, there's church mode: best behavior, all night.

Both dealers · every mood · one subscription · drunk is the default

I'm not drunk. The table's leaning.
Sal behind his rail, drunk or sober, depending on the switch. Click to poke him.

What the switch does

Three sets of lines. One dealer.

Flip it and the dealer swaps every line they say: the opener, every blind raise, every break. Nothing else about the night changes. Nobody bleeps anything, either. Sober isn't the drunk lines with the swears cut out. It's a whole second set of recordings, made on a different night, with a coffee. Church mode, under the switch, is a third: best behavior, one line a moment.

Drunk

The dealer as first recorded

The default
  • Every line exactly the way it came out, profanity and all.
  • Sal: 4 openers, 20 blind raises, 5 breaks. Sally: 5, 20 and 5.
  • Calls the blinds like a fire alarm with a grudge.
  • Best for your regular Thursday degenerates, and Randy.

Rated: absolutely not for church groups

Sober

A whole second set of recordings

One switch away
  • New lines with a cleaner mouth. No bleeps, and no dead air where a swear used to be.
  • Sal and Sally: 5 openers, 20 blind raises and 5 breaks each.
  • Calls the blinds like a fire drill with a clipboard.
  • Best for the office game, the in-laws, and the new guy's first night.

Rated: cleaner, not clean. Sober, not a saint.

Church mode

Best behavior, one line a moment

Under the switch
  • One polite line for the opener, one for every blind raise, one for every break.
  • The same line every time. They practiced. It shows.
  • Outranks the switch: while it's on there's no S, nothing poured, and even a game booked drunk behaves.
  • Best for the fellowship hall, the church group's game night, and poker with Grandma.

Rated: welcome back any time

The same, either way
  • Same clock
  • Same blinds and breaks
  • Same volume, we checked
  • Same shuffle bag, no repeats (church mode repeats on purpose)
  • Same mute key

Hear the difference

Same moment. Different night.

The blinds just went up. Here's how each dealer takes it, three whiskeys in and one black coffee in. Only the drunk one gets printed. The sober ones you'll want to hear for yourself, mostly to believe it.

Sal Drunk

The blinds are now raised. Ante up, you tight-ass bastards. Those chips aren't fucking decorations.”

Sal Sober

Same Sal, same seat, one large black coffee. He's been sober for seven minutes and he'd like you to know it.

blinds up · one of 20
Sally Drunk

Smoke, honey and bad intentions, three whiskeys deep. Sal has asked her to tone it down. Once.

blinds up · one of 20
Sally Sober

Same wink, fewer words you'd have to explain to your mother. Somehow still meaner than Sal.

blinds up · one of 20

Every clip is the real recording, straight out of the app: a blind raise from each dealer, drunk and sober.

And for the fellowship hall

Church mode. Best behavior.

Under the sober-or-drunk switch, in small print, there's one more: church mode. Switch it on and the slider goes away, because there's nothing left to decide. Sal tucks his shirt in, Sally finds a cardigan, and each of them says one polite line when the game starts, one at every blind raise and one at every break. The same line, every time. It is not thrilling. That is the whole idea.

Sal Church mode

Shirt tucked in, cigar in his pocket, knees still bad. He practiced his one line all week, and he would like you to notice.

the opener · the only one
Sally Church mode

Cardigan over the tattoos, hair behind her ears, the wink on hold until further notice. Somehow still the most intimidating person in the room.

the opener · the only one
  • One line a moment. An opener, a blind raise and a break, and that's the set. You'll know them by heart by the third level.
  • It outranks the switch.Turn it on in the timer's Settings and every night is church, even a game somebody booked drunk. S sits it out: there's nothing to pour.
  • Book it ahead. It's right under “How they turn up” when you book a game on the website, and on every game card in the timer.
  • Same volume.Mastered like every other line. Best behavior isn't quiet behavior.

Both clips are the real church-mode openers, straight out of the app.

Where the switch lives

Four ways to sober up a dealer.

Pick it ahead of time, pick it at the table, or change your mind halfway through the third level when somebody's mother walks in. Every one of them is one tap, and church mode sits right under the switch in each.

  1. When you book the game.On the website, “How they turn up” sits right under the dealer cards. The game keeps it, and the timer deals that night that way. Every game card in the timer has the same switch.
  2. In the timer's Settings.“Sober or drunk” is the house setting: it deals any night you start straight from the clock, no booking needed.
  3. On the clock, before the first hand. The “Turns up” switch sits on the start screen, so you can check who's walking in before anybody sees them.
  4. Mid-game: press S.The dealer sobers up on the spot, or gets poured one. The glass-or-cup button in the clock's controls does the same. Tonight only: your house setting stays put.

Still deciding?

Should your dealer drink tonight?

Six questions. No wrong answers, except the ones Randy gives.

  1. Is anybody's mother at the table?
  2. Is your boss playing?
  3. Is it somebody's bachelor party?
  4. Did somebody bring a cheese board?
  5. Is it game night at the church?
  6. Has Randy already said something worse tonight?
The verdict
Answer a few.

The dealer is waiting, and he is not a patient man.

Tale of the tape

Is sober just the drunk lines with bleeps?

No. Sober is a whole second set of recordings: new lines, a cleaner mouth, no bleeps and no dead air where a swear used to be. The drunk lines are still right there when you flip back.

Is sober clean enough for the kids?

No. Sober is cleaner, not clean. Church mode is as clean as the dealer gets, and even then the whole thing is for grown-ups. It says so in the terms, and we meant it.

Can I switch in the middle of a game?

Press S. The dealer sobers up on the spot, or gets poured one. It lasts for tonight only, so your usual setting is still there next time. Church mode can go on mid-game too, from the timer's Settings, and it takes the night over at the next line.

What is church mode?

The dealers on their best behavior: one polite line for the opener, one for every blind raise and one for every break, the same ones every time. It sits under the sober-or-drunk switch, and while it's on the switch goes away.

Why does church mode say the same thing every time?

Consistency is a virtue. Also, Sal only had the one polite thing to say, and Sally matched him out of solidarity.

Will flipping back and forth repeat lines?

No. Each mood keeps its own shuffle bag, so sobering them up and pouring them one again never repeats a line from earlier in the night.

Does Sally do sober too?

She does: thirty sober lines of her own. She says it's the caffeine. Nobody has asked her twice.

Does sober cost extra?

No. Both dealers, both moods, one subscription at $7.99 a month. The coffee is on the house. So is the rye.

Why is drunk the default?

It's called Degenerate Dealer. We have a brand to protect.

Is the sober dealer actually sober?

We don't ask. He says it's coffee. It smells like coffee. Mostly.

Pour the dealer one. Or don't.

Every subscription comes with Sal, Sally, sober, drunk and church mode, the invites, the clock and the standings. Pick a mood when you book the game, or press S when somebody's mother walks in.
